- Summary:
- Depicts animals at the Philadelphia Zoo emphasizing the baby pet zoo and annual May Day opening festivities. Highlights children with animals, animals with newborns, and zoo visitors, especially local socialites. Includes views of Nigerians in native dress at the African Village. Shows the WPA working at the zoo, painting murals and building stands. Depicts an animal parade at Locust and Broad Streets demonstrating for a cageless zoo. Also depicts photo contest entries and poster contest awards. Some of the animals portrayed include yaks, goats, cats, elephants, mules, leopards, oxen, arrtvarks, squirrels, antelopes, deer, elk, raccoons, skunks, beavers, porcupines, anteaters, sloths, sheep, turtles, snakes, cows, foxes, panthers, zebras, gaur, gnu, hedgehogs, giraffes, leopards, tiger, penguins, prairie dogs, rhinoceros, alligators, iguanas, rabbits, monkeys, lions, camels, and bears. Among the birds shown are parrots, pelicans, swans, storks, toucans, vultures, cockatoos, and duck.
