- Summary:
- Documents sites and activities in Philadelphia hospitals. Most hospitals are depicted with exterior views and architectural drawings. Emphasis is placed on health care within the hospital, particularly on the care of infants and children. Also shows the dedication of buildings and fundraising activities. Portrays nursing, nursing school graduates, and medical students. Some highlights are the operating room at Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital, raising sheep for blood and occupational therapy at Episcopal Hospital, aerial views of Germantown Hospital and the surrounding area, radium testing at Jeanes Cancer Hospital in Fox Chase, infantile paralysis patients at Orthopedic, new medical equipment at Osteopathic and infant care at Preston Retreat (a hospital for destitute expectant mothers). Interior views demonstrating health care at Northern Liberties Hospital show the delivery room, operating room, and dispensary, as well as the whirlpool, sterilizers, and an incubator. Maternity care at the Doctor's Hospital on 17th and Sansom Streets is highlighted. Patients in the bronchoscopic clinic at Temple University are portrayed, as well as ambulances and nurses. University Hospital is shown while it functioned as a World War I Base Hospital, including staff portraits. Will Eye Hospital is represented with images of a blind child, cataract removal, and with a view of property owned on the Parkway near Logan Square. The Women's Medical College is depicted with commencemnt exercises, laboratory views, and images showing X-ray devices. Portrays volunteers at several hospitals performing medical service, working on building maintenance, attending paitents, and preparing instruments. Oversize includes a view of the exterior of Medico-Chirurgical Bldg., N.D.
- These subject entries for the Philadelphia Record newspaper's photo morgue are primarily for Places (buildings, parks, streets, etc.), Things (Bicycles, Bison, Blind Persons [just sampling the B's]), Events (Democratic National Convention 1936, Flourtown Fair, Harvest Week) and Social Constructs (Home Economics, City Planning, Eating & Drinking, etc.).
