Summary:
Documents slum housing, building collapses, rowhouses, reconditioned housing, and new housing developments. Includes images of architectural models, elevations, and the selection of homes for demolition. Depicts views of construction in Mayfair, Germantown, Hill Creek and Juniata Park. Portrays the Housing Authority and Junior League inspecting neighborhoods. Includes views of groundbreaking ceremonies at Chatham Village, Girard Village, Queen Lane, and Shipstead Homes. Shows the Federal Housing Administration conducting a mortgage clinic and portrays office workers. Portrays the queue waiting to complete tenant applications at the Philadelphia Housing Authority. Documents registration offices and inspectors of defense housing at 30th Street Station. Includes a view taken in Germantown before project construction began. Shows the opening of Passyunk Homes (a defense housing project) and families moving into Abbotsford Homes, and Hill Creek. Contains interior and exterior views of defense housing at Pennypack Woods and the Tinicum Project. Domestic life is highlighted in several housing project images. There is a view of a black funeral procession, a striking image of a black family moving into the Belmont Avenue project, and several items focused on blacks at the construction and dedication of the Mason Housing Project at 20th and Lombard Streets. Also shows eviction notices received by families living in defense housing on the 2700 block of 10th Street and Johnston near 12th. These views highlight the streets as well as the residents. Includes exterior views of vancant buildings during a housing shortage. Oversize shows the Parker Avenue project, looking west from Broad Street.
