在魏晋南北朝近四百年的历史中,社会严重动荡乃至停滞的时期是三国和东晋,南北朝反而是社会相对安定并有所发展的时期,南北朝社会都发展出不同于以往的形态和特质,这促使南北朝墓葬礼制具有很强的独立性,并具备了相当完整的"生命史".北朝的墓葬情况如北朝历史一样略显复杂,北魏奠定了北朝历史以及墓葬礼制发展演化的走向.作为汉唐之变关键阶段的南北朝时期,其墓葬礼制的继承和变化,都是对社会变化所作出的反应,是中古社会内部自我调适在丧葬文化领域的一个表现,这也是南北朝墓葬礼制研究的主要价值.对南北朝墓葬礼制的探讨需要与之相应的研究和描述方式,利用而不满足于考古学分区分期研究,在考古学角度下将南北朝墓葬礼制研究与其他学科的研究成果相结合,不失为一个有益的尝试.
