복합 건축이랑 오래전부터 유지되어 오던 생활과 교환의 접합이 이루어진 것으로 굳이 도시에서라고만 한정지울 수는 없으나 대체적으로 도시의 상업 건축을 요구하는 기능과 본래의 기능이 수반된 것임을 뜻하고 있다. 건축에서의 복합성은 하나의 기능을 지닌 건축이 다른 기능을 수반하려 함에서 발생되며, 하나의 건축이 단일한 기능으로 완성된 경우에도 더욱 미분하면 다양한 형태의 이용상 분화를 발생하며 기능적 복합이 이루어지고 있음을 알 수 있다. 여기서 다루고 있는 복합성이란 현저히 등장한 이용의 형태가 초기부터 요구되어 계획된 건축이 다양한 기능들과 접촉되면서 야기되는 문제점들에 주목하고 있는 것이다.
