British Library Add. MS 78438 is a letterbook compiled by Mary Evelyn, wife of John Evelyn the diarist. The manuscript, which is autograph, consists of tipped-in copies of Evelyn's outgoing correspondence. Recipients include Evelyn's husband, John; her son, also John; her daughter Elizabeth; her brother-in-law, William Glanville; her husband's cousin, Mary Evelyn of Wotton; her son's tutor, Ralph Bohun; her own cousins, Sir Samuel and Lady Tuke; and other friends such as Susan Hungerford, James Tyrrell, and Anne Howard. One letter is in French, addressed to 'Chere Cousine' (fol.4r). All of the letters seem to date from the late 1660s or early 1670s. Evelyn's letters are typically short, mostly 1-2 pages in length; a few are as long as 4 pp. Most are signed 'ME'. Letters are transcribed on fols 1r-32v and 36r-37v (with a few blank versos); fols 33r-35v are blank. Fol. 37 is followed by 4 blank leaves and a few endpapers. Some of Mary Evelyn's letters from this manuscript were included in Bray and Upcott's edition of John Evelyn's diary and correspondence. Some are also cited in W. G. Hiscock's John Evelyn and his Family Circle and John Evelyn and Margaret Godolphin. The letterbook as a whole is described by Frances Harris in 'The Letterbooks of Mary Evelyn', English Manuscript Studies, 1100-1700 7 (1998): 202-15. The manuscript was formerly Christ Church Evelyn MS 9, and British Library MS Evelyn ME 10.
