British Library Add. MS 78437 is a box of manuscript material relating to the Evelyn family, much of which is associated with Mary Evelyn (1635-1709), the wife of the diarist. Only one of the documents in the box is a compilation by Mary Evelyn. This is a calligraphic exercise book, bound in a marbled paper cover. The title leaf, transcribed in red and black, bears the inscription 'Maria Evelyn Anno Domini 1649 Meliora latent' [i.e. the best things are hidden]. The title is centred and surrounded by ornamental flourishes. Subsequently the manuscript, which is unfoliated, consists of 20 folios plus one blank endleaf. Text is transcribed on rectos only. On each leaf, Mary Evelyn has copied out a line or couplet, in Latin or English, in a fine italic hand. The first instance of this line or couplet is transcribed at the head of the page like a title, usually within rules of red and/or black. Further copies of the same line or couplet are then transcribed on the remainder of the page. Many folios are subscribed with the copyist's name: 'Maria Evelyn' (fols [1],[6]) or 'Mary Evelyn' (fols [2],[3],[5],[10],[11]). On fols [12] and [13] and the first sequence on fol.[16], each line is endorsed 'M.E.'. Pages measure approximately 202 x 148 mm (landscape). The remaining documents in Add. MS 78437 comprise loose copies of letters from and to Mary Evelyn, the printed broadside 'The Picture of the Princess Henrietta', 'Miscellaneous papers, including family anecdotes, a book-list of 1706, and a group of papers, 1655-1696', and copies of verses addressed to Mary Evelyn.
