- Summary:
- "Deliberate practice entails experiential, repeated training with a particular skill until it becomes automatic. In the context of psychotherapy, this involves two trainees role-playing as a client and a therapist, switching roles every so often, under the guidance of a supervisor. The trainee playing the therapist reacts to client statements, ranging in difficulty from beginner to intermediate to advanced, with improvised responses that reflect fundamental therapeutic skill. This book focuses on systemic family therapy (SFT), an umbrella term capturing all types of family-based interventions that treat problems in the context where they reside. Although a broad and deep familiarity with the theoretical and empirical SFT literature is important, SFT trainees are increasingly in need of proficiency in core SFT skills given the demands that come with working with systems. The importance of experiential learning in the training and supervision process is magnified by the reality that, especially for novice trainees who are just beginning to work with clients, there are relatively few opportunities to practice the wide range of clinical skills that are theoretically at one's disposal. SFT trainees usually receive excellent training in theoretical underpinnings, coupled with many hours of therapy and a high standard of supervision; nonetheless, there remain too few avenues for trainees to achieve competencies in core SFT skills. The book adopts deliberate practice methods to support experiential -learn by doing-training opportunities. It describes the methods and stimuli that can facilitate practicing a range of important SFT skills. The book augments other common training components."--Preface (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved).
