Summary:
This case will prepare readers to critically use published books and extract useful information from them for any research purpose. When using books published before the nineteenth century as a historical source, we should bear in mind that we do not share cultural, social, and historical context in common with their contemporary readers. Both the technical process of making and circulating books as well as the role of authors, publishers, printers, and even readers differed from today. In some cases, contemporary readers had different attitudes to a certain genre of books, and we must read them with a different awareness from everyday reading. One effective way to do this is to pay attention to the paratext or elements surrounding the main text. In this case study, we will employ analytical bibliography, the study of books as material objects and the transmission by them. We will consider the kind of data available in published books and online resources, and how this data might be analysed. We will gain an understanding of the basic elements of books in early modern Europe, examine books in detail as physical objects, and consider how books may have been received by contemporary and subsequent readers.
