- Summary:
- This case study focuses on a pamphlet produced as an emigrant guidebook. The case study begins by contextualising the pamphlet as an emigrant guidebook, explaining the conventions of such a source. The use of rhetoric - broadly defined as writing intended to persuade - is emphasised. Strategies for critically engaging with the use of rhetoric in the pamphlet include attending to when the source was published, by whom, and for what purposes. This case study then scrutinises the pamphlet Australia. A New Home? which the authors intended for potential migrants to Australia from the United States. After introducing the historical context of migration to Australia in the late-1940s by American ex-servicemen, the pamphlet is examined in conjunction with a contemporary newspaper report that relies on the words of Australian government officials to urge more Americans to migrate. Such contemporary sources are helpful for analysing the pamphlet's message, including how the authors aimed to be perceived by their readers. In the final section, the pamphlet is read as advice literature to explore representations and identities suggested to potential migrants and which were likely held by the authors themselves.
