- Summary:
- What can a man in and out of a London debtor's prison tell us about colonialism in southern Africa? This case study delves into the making of Saxe Bannister's Humane Policy, a 540-page lamentation on the disorder of the early nineteenth century Cape Colony, but in which Bannister called on authorities to implement a suite of reforms. In what follows, we use the text to explore what the idea of colonialism meant two decades before the Victorian age (1837-1901) commenced. The source also helps us understand what was unique about British colonialism. We untangle the relationship between liberalism, evangelism, and Empire as all three took shape and use the work to unpack the professional milieu and political cosmos of an obscure imperial careerist. By the end, you will have gained an important perspective on the 'civilising mission', mapped the relationships between different parts of the Empire and glimpsed the wide variety of sources with which historians of colonialism grapple.
