Refers to Charles Expelly, an Issuing Clerk of the Commissary stationed at an outpost, found guilty of embezzling part of the provisions under his charge; was found guilty and sentenced to death, but the jury recommended him for mercy, and Maitland granted him a conditional pardon, that he should serve as a soldier in the 60th or any other regiment in Jamaica, or wherever he may be ordered, for an unlimited time; Maitland ordered he serve in Jamaica as he is notorious in Grenada, and in the 60th regiment as he is German and there are other men raised in Germany in that regiment.
