- Summary:
- Since the mid 1960s, historians have embraced new forms of research often referred to as the "New Social History." A central element of this new research is the use of quantitative data. With quantitative data, historians have been able to examine groups of people in the past who had traditionally been ignored. These include African Americans, working people, women, the poor, as well as ethnic and immigrant groups. The examination of quantitative data has also led to the emergence of new fields of historical analysis such as family history, historical demography, and social history. And finally, with the use of quantitative data, historians now have the tools to examine new primary sources including probate records, Civil War pension records, city directories, and census manuscripts such as the New York State Census of 1865. Using the New York Census of 1865 as a primary historical document, this guide will introduce you to the use of quantitative data analysis as well as basic and advanced statistics. In addition, by examining the "children ever born" question that asks women how many children they had during their life, we will employ the data skills we learn to examine an important historical question related to the empowerment of women during the nineteenth century.
