Summary:
CO 137/181/1. Uprising of enslaved peoples reported in the parishes of St James and Trelawney in the north-west district on 19 December, following a 'season of unusual sickness and distress'. Martial Law declared on 30 December; 'rebellion' was reported as having been 'put down' and 'tranquillity restored'. 60 enslaved peoples reported killed, 1 white killed and 4 wounded; 100 estates reported as burnt. 'Disturbances' first broke out on Salt Spring estate, refusal of enslaved peoples to work beyond New Years Day, rumour had spread that an Order for their freedom had come out and was being withheld by masters. Baptist Missionaries accused of involvement.
