- Description: Lieutenant (later Captain) Alexander McColl left New Zealand with the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in October 1914. He saw action with the Wellington Regiment at Gallipoli and served as Adjutant in the newly constituted Ist Battalion, Wellington Regiment which landed in France in April 1916. He was killed in action in the vicinity of Armentieres on 2 July 1916.From late January until March 1915 the Wellington Regiment was stationed near the Suez Canal defending it against Turkish forces. On 30 April the Regiment landed at Gallipoli and was engaged in the Gallipoli Campaign until 19 December when it was evacuated and returned back to Egypt.McColl was wounded on 1 May 1915 and hospitalised in Cairo, returning to Gallipoli on 26 May. From 15-30 June he was stationed away from the front as part of General Sir Ian Hamilton's bodyguard.The diary contains a detailed account of McColl's experiences as an officer with the Wellington Regiment during this period.See also MSX-8205.
