The Lebel Model 1886 rifle entered service in the French Army in 1887. The bold action was modified in 1893. This 8mm bolt action infantry repeating rifle was capable of holding eight rounds in its forestock tube magazine plus one round in the transporter. The Lebel rifle had the distinction of being the first military rifle to use smokeless powder ammunition. The 'Balle D' bullets were introduced in 1901. The weapon saw service throughout the 1914-1918 period. Its main weakness was its slow to reload tube magazine. Calibre: 8mm Lebel. Bolt action. Overall length: 1300mm. Barrel length: 800mm. Weight: 4.18kg unloaded; 4.41kg loaded with 10 rounds. Effective range: 400m. Maximum range: 1800m. The two extra images show a French 8mm Lebel bullet.
