- Summary:
- Description: John Aldred Luxford was a Methodist clergyman. He saw service in the South African War as a Methodist chaplain and with the outbreak of war in 1914 he volunteered to work as a chaplain for the NZ troops. He was attached to different regiments but spent longer periods with the Wellington and Otago Infantry Regiments. He worked as a chaplain in Egypt before being sent to Gallipoli where he was severely wounded and he had to have a leg amputated. Eventually he was sent to England where he was appointed chaplain to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames. His diaries were sent home as each was completed and because of this many of the entries include notes to his wife.Contains 3 diaries which cover the periods: 4 to 10 Jan 1915, 11 to 17 Jan 1915 and 18 to 24 Jan 1915. Luxford continues to be based at Zeitoun Camp, Egypt and the diary entries describe his work as chaplain to the Wellington Infantry Regiment there.See also MSX-3468; MSX-3469 and MS-Papers-4454-3.
