Area: Ovillers-la-Boisselle - Bazentin-le-Petit Wood - Bazentin-le-Grand - Longueval - Ginchy - Bécourt - Fricourt - Mametz - Montauban - Bernafay & Trônes Woods - Guillemont - Bécordel-Bécourt - Carnoy - Maricourt Wood - Hardecourt-au-Bois - Maurepas Station. Detail, grid & contours grey, Water blue, German trenches red with names in blue, British front line pecked blue. Reduced from 1:10,000 trench maps. Showing the situation before the opening of the Battle of the Somme. Used during the Somme battle. MS markings on face in Mametz - Montauban - Longueval area: Queen's Nullah, 52 B.HQ, A & B, C & D, new trenches, Seaforths, etc. MS on reverse: Capt. . . . [indeciph]. The intention was that this map would be printed at 1:10,000 scale, but owing to a mix-up in instructions it was reproduced at 1:20,000. Nevertheless, it proved very popular [source: Lt. Col. M. N. MacLeod, History of 4th FSC/B]. Title printed on reverse. Worn, some drops of candle wax, but holding together very well.
