Description: Extremely detailed and uncensored diary covering his employment at a firm dealing with animal hides and pelts and social life in his home town of Chesterfield, with interesting references to the impact of the outbreak of war, his decision not to join up, based in part on family pressure, and the procedure to stay exempt once enlisted, his membership of the local rifle club, Belgian refugees (one of whom, a schoolboy, lived with his family for a year) and life on the Home Front.
