Description: Three Royal Artillery observation officers survey battery fire on a battlefield from a trench in the foreground. One officer sits in the trench using a field telephone whilst the two other officers observe the artillery fire by looking out over the lip of the trench. There is a bomb-damaged tree beside them to the left and the battlefield is undulating as a result of previous artillery fire, with further trees to the right. Puffs of smoke indicate where the artillery shells are falling. All is set against a cloudy sky apart from two horizontal bands of bright blue sky.
