- Description: Interesting and well-written collection of letters written home during his training with the 3/15th (Reserve) Battalion London Regiment near Winchester, (September 1916 - January 1917), describing his living conditions and life in camp, his fellow soldiers and officers, Zeppelin raids, food and parcels from home, and a boost to his morale after meeting a wounded 'veteran' back from the front; then on active service with the 2/15th Battalion London Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own Civil Service Rifles) (179th Brigade, 60th Division) in Salonika, (January-July 1917), referring to the wildlife of Macedonia, mail and parcels from home, a brief spell in hospital suffering from dysentery, and the hot weather; and then in Egypt and Palestine, (August 1917 until his death in action on 27 December 1917), describing the local people, his enthusiasm for the Middle East, the art of riding a camel, living conditions and food, and involvement in the capture of Jerusalem (December 1917). Together with a photograph of him in uniform, a diary covering the period January-September 1917 and containing brief daily entries mainly concerning his service in Salonika, a printed obituary, three letters of condolence sent to his family following his death (February - March 1918), a photograph of his grave, and a card advertising 'Miss Karney's Hotel for Soldiers' in Palestine.
