- Summary:
- In the enchanting cave far above the village of Maridunum, the boy Merlin meets the wise but eccentric old man, Galapas. Curiously, Galapas seems to be expecting him. Galapas assumes responsibility for Merlin's education with both orthodox and magical teaching. The young Merlin is shunned by the court of Maridunum and hated by his Uncle Camlach, who has already tried to kill him. Despite this, Merlin finds solace under the stimulating tutelage of Galapas and the protection of Cerdic, his Saxon slave. Their peace is short lived. His grandfather the King is killed in an accident. Cerdic is blamed for his death and murdered by Camlach. Merlin is now in acute danger and Galapas urges him to run away. But, outside the palace walls, he is seized and abducted by two strangers.
