Description: Album of black and white photographic prints and photo-postcards covering prisoner of war camps on Malta housing German and Turkish prisoners during the First World War. These are St Clements Camp; Rock Gate Camp and Verdala Barracks Camp. Many of the photographs show the quarters used to accommodate prisoners. There are also scenes of daily life and activities in the camps including Roll Call; Kaiser's Birthday Sports on 27 January 1917; football matches in 1916 and 1917 including the team from SMS EMDEN; the skittle alley with teams from Bremen and Flensburg; choirs, orchestras and bands, concerts and amateur dramatics in camp theatres; art classes and exhibitions of art, crafts and models made by prisoners; mail room staff bathrooms; barbers shop; the canteen and preparation of tea. There are also photographs of the British military staff of the camps; group photographs of prisoners' football teams, including those of SMS BRESLAU and SMS EMDEN, and individual portraits of a number of British, German and Turkish officers. A number of photo-postcards of places in Malta are also included in the collection. Amongst the non-photographic material in the collection is a press cutting dated 24 December 1921 reporting on the riots in Cairo and a number of pen and ink drawings of the camps by F L Hennig dated 1919.
