- Summary:
- "All love begins with a look." Since his student days, Arnold Stadler has been interested in the pioneer of Abstract Expressionism, Mark Tobey. In his book, the Büchner Prize winner follows in the footsteps of the American painter, from Trempealeau on the Mississippi via Seattle, Devon and New York to Basel, where the artist, who was born in 1890, died in 1976. Stadler not only introduces Tobey's impressive work, but also traces his very personal connection to his "life artist" and deals with the question of why Tobey was not suitable for an American hero à la Jackson Pollock. The book is illustrated with works by Tobey and photographs from private and public collections.
