- Summary:
- During the processes of colonization in various territories of the Americas, the destruction and worship of sacred images were two policies stipulated by the institutions of power to subdue communities and, in some cases, colonized people adopted them as a mechanism of resistance. Without neglecting the differences between one policy and another, the violent act against an image and the worship of it share a belief for the power of the image: they are two sides of the same coin. "Destruction and worship" seeks to investigate these policies and look at how they are intimately linked to processes of subjugation typical of an imperial and colonial policy. From various transatlantic case studies, the author draws a panorama rich in shades that highlight the complexity of the visual culture of the 16th and 17th centuries in the territories of the Spanish Crown.
