Summary:
Deborah Roberts's work critiques notions of beauty, the body, race, and identity, often through depictions of Black children, historically among the most vulnerable members of our population. Playful and serious, heroic and insecure, these youth are given complex portrayals that highlight the fraught assumptions and perceptions around them. Published by The Contemporary Austin in conjunction with a major solo museum exhibition in 2021, Deborah Roberts: I'm presents new works, including figurative mixed-media collages, paintings, prints, text-based works on paper, a sound and video installation, and the artist's first ever outdoor mural. Together, these works extend Roberts's ongoing dialogue with American history, art history, Black culture, and popular culture. Exhibition: The Contemporary Austin, USA (23.01. - 15.08.2021) / MCA Denver, USA (10.09.2021 - 30.01.2022) / Art + Practice, in collaboration with the California African American Museum, Los Angeles, USA (19.03. - 20.08.2022) / Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens, Jacksonville, USA (16.09. - 04.12.2022).
