Summary:
"Psychotherapists have long appreciated the power of parenting and the influence the parent-child relationship has on the developing child. However, advances in brain imaging and genomic technologies, partnered with long-term longitudinal studies of the development process, have increased the understanding of the physiological and psychological mechanisms through which early experiences contribute to later functioning. This book supports therapists in their work with young children, bringing a lens that shifts the therapeutic focus to the parent-child relationship. It is organized into three parts. Part one provides practical knowledge about the parent-child relationship and healthy parenting. It reviews the initial development of the parent-child relationship, antecedents that influence the quality of parent-child attachment, and the child's internalization of the relationship in the early years of life. Part two includes a discussion of evidence-based assessment and intervention techniques valuable to therapeutic work with parents and children. It introduces a multimethod approach to the assessment of the parent-child relationship, reviewing standardized assessment tools across measurement domains. Part three shifts away from what is optimal in assessment and treatment to frankly consider some of the common barriers faced by therapists across systems. It discusses the importance of the fatherchild relationship and the neglected role of fathers in the treatment process. The book considers some of the societal-level challenges impeding the achievement of health equity for all parents and children, and offers suggestions for areas in which therapists may be advocates for themselves and for families."--Preface (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2022 APA, all rights reserved).
