- Summary:
- "This dissertation represents research into an aspect of Philadelphia life of the late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century involving the Brazilian Court and its connection to North American Federalism as exemplified in the many civic, philanthropic, religious and intellectual accomplishments of Condy Raguet, Esq. (1784-1842). It focuses on Condy Raguet, a Philadelphian of French descent: merchant, banker, political economist, colonel, state representative, diplomat, writer and editor, and religious leader. It searches the processes by which Condy Raguet expresses himself with respect to the world around him, supported by his diversified experiences, and in view of his lifelong autodidactic efforts. It attempts to discover how early nineteenth century education and notions of culture and society were challenged by these particular achievements of Condy Raguet, as an autodidact."--Abstract.
