Summary:
Printed certificate of membership completed in manuscript with the name of the newly elected George Fox, the date (January 20, 1786), and the signatures of society officials: President Benjamin Franklin; Vice Presidents John Ewing, William White, and James Vaughan; and Secretaries James Hutchinson, Robert Patterson, Samuel Magaw, and John Foulke. A note below the signatures, "Elected 18th January 1783" probably refers to Fox and probably is an Old Style (Julian) date, as the APS records his membership from 1784. An embossed paper seal of the society. barely legible, is suspended from the certificate on a ribbon. George Fox was a student of the Academy and College of Philadelphia, later a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania, and a physician.
