- Summary:
- After meeting and falling in love in during America's Pacific War with Japan in 1944, Navy lieutenant Vaughn Davis Bornet and Mary Elizabeth Winchester stayed connected with love letters as he performed his duties as Barracks Officer at Naval Air Station, Alameda, California, and she began her year as president of the senior class at the University of Nevada, Reno. One hundred fifty-three of their letters are reproduced here, along with twelve essays that illustrate the background of chaos and devastation of the war that always threatened to cut their love affair short.
