Summary:
Ch. 10 (pp. 161-180), "Imperialism and Anti-Semitism: Trieste, the Bukowina, Bohemia", discusses the spread of antisemitism in the last decades of the 19th century in these areas of the Habsburg Empire. States that Judeophobia existed in Bohemia before 1848, but the events of 1848 led to widespread popular attacks on Jews in Bohemia and Hungary. Outbursts of antisemitism occurred again after the economic crash of 1873. The anti-Jewish hostility of the 1880s was an expression of anti-modern social resentments and economic hardships. also deals with the extent of assimilation among Viennese and Galician Jews.
