The woodcuts retain their English captions. Some portions of the English text are omitted: "The nation's loss" (poem), English ed. p. 68; "The president and the painter", p. 68; "Oh! why should the spirit of mortal be proud?" (poem), p. 70; verses beginning "Before the splendors", p. 74; "Dirge" (poem), p. 86; "Attempted assassinations in modern times", p. 106-108; "Bowling Green", p. 112; "Maine", p. 113; "Weymouth after the Copperheads", p. 114; "Another scene", p. 116
Collation: [1]⁸ 2-5⁸ [$1 (+4, -5₁) signed; signing 4 as 5₁]; 40 leaves, pp. [2 unnumbered] 25-28 [2 unnumbered] 29-34 [35-36 (35 blank)] 37-50 [51-52 (51 blank)] 53-66 [67-68 (67 blank)] 69-82 85 [1 unnumbered] 86-92 [1 unnumbered] 93-100. It appears that the text was composed so that leaf 4 would contain the woodcut of Booth's escape (as p. [84], with p. [83] blank); but that the imposition was changed to compress the whole printing to 40 leaves. Leaf 4₈ was imposed to contain p. 85 (with signature "5" left in), with the woodcut on the verso, unnumbered and not counted in the pagination; thereafter recto and verso pages were reversed (p. 86-92), followed by the woodcut of the hearse on the unnumbered and uncounted verso of p. 92, followed by 93-100 correctly set up as recto/verso
Issued in illustrated yellow wrapper: portrait of Lincoln on front cover, woodcut "Booth on the stage ..." on back cover.
