Newspapers are listed by state and city, which are in alphabetical order, then, by city, in alphabetical order by title. These sources include not only newspaper annual advertising directories, union lists, and finding aids, but also African American bibliographies, yearbooks, and several specifically African American newspaper sources. This book is not a union list of newspapers, which lists available issues (long runs or individual issues) of specific papers and the repositories that house them. Although the source codes may clues to repositories, the search for specific individual issues is left to the researcher.
