- Summary:
- "The followers of George Rapp first formed into a distinct religious movement in 1785 in Württemberg, Germany. His followers were common folk who were disaffected with the cold formality of the established Evangelical Luthern Church, the intellectualism of the university-trained clergy, and the corrupt practices of the Württemberg government. Because they separated from the Lutheran Church, they were refered to in Württemberg as Separatists. Although they were peasants, Rapp's followers were not necessarily poor; many brought considerable wealth into the communal Harmony Society once it was founded in the United States. Among the male disciples of Rapp were a good many farmers as well as blacksmiths, carpenters, coopers, distillers, hostelers, shoemakers, wagon-makers, weavers, tailors and gardeners. Women were restricted to spinning and domestic industries, but contributed greatly to the spiritual life of the separatist group"--p. 15.
