- "The raven" was first published in the Evening mirror, January 29, 1845, v. 1, no. 97, with the note prefixed "We are permitted to copy (in advance of publication) from the 2d no. of the American review, the following remarkable poem by Edgar Poe ..."
- It was also published in the the New York mirror, February 8, 1845, v. 1, no. XVIII, p. 276, with the same note. In the American review, February, 1848, vol. I, no. II, p. 143-145, it was printed under the caption "The raven. By ----- Quarles", with an appreciative note, signed "Ed. Am. rev." In the Broadway journal, February 8, 1845, v. 1, no. 6, p. 90, it appears under title "The raven. By Edgar A. Poe", with slight changes and with the notice "We copy the following poem from the American review, the new Whig magazine, on account of its unusual beauty ... Mr. Willis copies it into the Mirror ..."
- "Poems written in youth" (p. [53]-91) have foot-note "Private reasons ... have induced me ... to re-publish these, the crude compositions of my earliest boyhood. They are printed verbatim ..." (though not reprinted exactly "verbatim", the changes were unimportant)--cf. George E. Woodberry, Life of Poe, v. 2 (1909), p. 163; also John W. Robertson, Edgar A. Poe, 1921, p. 332-334.
