Biography/History:
Moses Ashear (1877-1940; originally Ashkar ha-Kohen), born in Aleppo, studied music and composition under Raphael Antebi Taboush (and transcribed many of his hymns, as Taboush was blind); appointed Hazan at Aleppo's Central Synagogue in 1903; emigrated to New York in 1912, later appointed as Hazan at the Syrian-Jewish Magen David Synagogue in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York until his death; Ashear continued the Aleppo liturgical rites and traditions for the Syrian-Jewish community in New York, including bringing the Aleppo custom of Bakashot and pizmonim.
Summary:
Book of Bakashot according to the late 19th century custom of Aleppo, associated with the Aleppo hymnist Raphael Antebi Taboush (1853-1918; written in the hand of his student, Moses Ashear; autograph on f. 223r), likely written circa 1893; many of the compositions are by Raphael Antebi Taboush (sometimes under the composer's name Rafaʼel ʻAdes).

Written in a Syrian-Sephardic cursive script; initial words and highlights written in a Sephardic square script (black ink outline, filled with orange paint inside letters). Contemporary printed stickers pasted on select blanks.
Arranged in Arabic Maqām, in Hebrew charachters (in order of Rast, Mahur, Nahawand (including occassionals : תכון לעד יפה, by "Avraham", for the Tsedaḳah u-marpe sick society of Aleppo, and Taboush's לעיר חנה דורשה דודי for Ḥevrat Bene Yiśraʼel; f. 46r), Sikah, Ajam (אוג'), Iraq, Sasgar, Saba, Mehayar, Bayat, Hoseni, and Hijaz. The piyut ישא ברכה ותהלה was composed for the Rishon le-Tsiyon Yaakov Shaul Elyashar (1817-1906) upon his assuming the office folowing the death of Raphael Meir Panigel in 1893 (f. 116r); other Bakashot are compositions of Yaʻaḳov Sukari, Mosheh Jamal, and Eliyahu Ḥaver.
