- Biography/History:
- Judah Löb Saraval was the rabbi of Venice and a halakhic authority for Italian Jewry; a student of Samuel Judah Katzenellenbogen in Padua, and rabbi in Venice since at least 1606; Simone Luzzatto and Leon da Modena were both rabbis of Venice at this time, though Modena's funeral dirge for Saraval has been published (in Diwan, Philadelphia 1932, number 207 on pages 210-211) Luzzato's eulogy remained as this manuscript.

- Simone (Śimḥah) Luzzato's holograph of the his elder peer in the Venetian rabbnate, containing material on the suffering of the righteous, as Saraval experienced the death of his eldest son and was impoverished, as well as his final illness.
