Notes:
Lydgate's free translation of a French original, which, according to the opening and closing stanzas of his poem, was painted upon the wall at the church of SS. Innocents in Paris. First printed by Tottel at the end of his edition of Lydgate's Fall of princes in 1554.
In this edition the texts of the two manuscripts giving different versions are printed on opposite pages.
