- National Jewish fraternal order founded in 1892 by Russian Jewish immigrants. Instrumental in the development and preservation of Yiddish culture in the United States. Active participants in the Jewish labor movement. Aligned with the Socialist Party for three decades, then increasingly supported liberal Democratic policies and Jewish nationalism. First Philadelphia branch probably chartered 1904.
