Summary:
National Jewish fraternal order founded in 1892 by Russian Jewish immigrants. Instrumental in the development and preservation of Yiddish culture in the United States. Active participants in the Jewish labor movement. Aligned with the Socialist Party for three decades, then increasingly supported liberal Democratic policies and Jewish nationalism. First Philadelphia branch probably chartered 1904.
Notes:
Minutes, correspondence, financial records, and membership records of City and District Committee, Cemetery Department, Medical Department, Educational Department document the scope and stability of Philadelphia district programs. The efforts of Morris Shapiro and Joseph Gorelick are especially well represented.
