- Summary:
- This collection contains the records of the Germantown (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Courts of Record, dating from 1691 to 1707. The matters addressed by these court sessions include property disputes and transfers, apprenticeships, deeds of sale for goods and land, assault and battery, violations of liquor laws, and other matters. Volume 1 (1691-1707) is in English, although half of the pages are blank, and is accompanied by two transcripts: one typed and one handwritten transcript. The first entry in this volume is for August 1, 1691. Volume 2 is mostly in German; the last two pages of the records are in English and discuss powers of attorney. It has an index of names of individuals involved in court matters. The first entry of this volume is for April 2, 1691.Although these volumes cover some of the same dates, the contents appear to be unique. Researchers should note that dates with entries in one volume do not have entries in the other volume, although the same men are listed as officers of the court for similar dates in both volumes. For example, both volumes have entries for different days in December 1701, but Volume 1 includes a description of the cases heard on the 9th and 20th and the other for cases heard on the 1st, 4th, 17th, and 30th. Both volumes list Aret Klinken as bailiff and Peter Shumacker as a burgess.
