The 4th report of the American temperance society was designed as the first of a series of permanent documents (the first three reports being out of print) and contains a history of the formation of the society and of the temperance reformation from its commencement. cf its 7th report, 1834, p. 38-39 (Permanent temperance documents, v. 1, p. 376-377).
The American temperance society was succeeded in 1836 by the American temeperance union, and its documents were reissued in 1852 by the union as v. 1 of the collection in 3 vols. entitled Permanent temperance documents.
