Summary:
Howard was a tireless supporter of HSP and a solid friend of the Library. Most recently he had funded the Lewis Processing Project, moving us closer to his goal of having every manuscript collection fully processed, described and accessible. Howard embodied the role of service to non-profits. He passed these values to his sons (and now Rudy also serves on HSP's Board). Howard was an attorney with Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads. He was first elected to HSP's Board in 1969, and served as recording secretary from 1970-1986, Board president from 1987-1989, and Board chair from 1993-1999. In the mid- to late-1990s, Howard helped the Society forge a renewed mission and promoted the transformation of the Society's facilities to reflect its new mission. He spearheaded the effort to find a responsible institutional partner to take charge of the Society's art and artifact collection, and advanced the Society's documentary collections through the acquisition of the Mutual Assurance Company records and others.
