- Summary:
- The Redvers family originated in Normandy where the founder of the family was Richard de Redvers (d. 1107) who was a strong supporter of Henry I. His son, Baldwin de Redvers (d. 1155), became the first Earl of Devon and the family was given a number of estates throughout Devon, on the Isle of Wight and in Hampshire and Dorset. However, the family suffered from early deaths and political setbacks. The main line eventually died out and the earldom and its estates passed to the Courtenay family.
