Summary:
This set of fifty, 11" x 14", black-and-white pictures includes prints and photographs of actual maps, documents, newspaper articles, political cartoons, paintings, drawings, engravings, ruins, buildings and artifacts from the colonial years, 1600 to 1774. These pictures emphasize the development of colonial institutions, such as governments, schools, and churches. They also portray the physical environments of the New World, show evidence of city planning, identify the growing role of printed communication, and trace the development of American independence.
The pamphlet, a text prepared by the Smithsonian Institute, details each of the prints and provides important background information. A teaching guide gives learning objectives, display and exhibit suggestions, teaching ideas, discussion and debate suggestions, and ideas for community involvement.
