Summary:

Carl Schurz was born in Liblar, near Cologne, Prussia, and immigrated to the United States with his wife Margarethe in 1852. They settled in Wisconsin, where Schurz was admitted to the bar and became active in Republican Party politics. He served as American minister to Spain in 1861-1862, as a general in the Union Army from 1862-1865, was elected to the Senate from Missouri in 1868, and served as Secretary of the Interior in 1877-1881. Throughout his career he was an active spokesman for the German-American community. The collection contains correspondence, speeches, articles and books, newspaper clippings, printed matter, and scrapbooks. The original documents are in the Library of Congress. Register available.
