- Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in Philadelphia in 1793 as the first meeting house for Richard Allen and his followers, who had left St. George's Church because of racial discrimination in 1787. The church became the nucleus for the African Methodist Episcopal Church, which was formed in 1816. The records include minutes of the trustees, financial records; minutes of the Preachers' Association, Philadelphia Conference; minutes of the Ushers' Association; Sunday School and receipt books, and a run of the Christian Recorder.
