After the centennial it was acquired by the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art for use primarily as a museum, most of the collections of which formed the nucleus, in 1928, of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It slowly lost its museum function to become a recreation center, which was renovated from 1959-1967.
