- Notes:
- "This file contains information about the 1769 assessment for the "Proprietary" or "eighteen pence" tax in Philadelphia County. Though this list appears in the Pennsylvania Archives, Third Series, Volume XIV, and though the GSP Research Room also has a copy of the paperback reprint by Family Line Publications, this file improves them. First note that this file contains pages printed off a microfilm reel in the Pennsylvania Archives. Second, the reel, and therefore, this file - contains relevant pages from the Statutes at Large (1764) establishing and explaining the tax, why it was imposed, and how it was assessed. Third, the orginial handwritten pages shown on the microfilm and the printout contain more information than published in the Archives and the Family Line Book, in that more details of the taxpayer's taxables are included. The handwritten list, for example, shows debts owed by whom and to whom, and tax owed on the notes. Too, the handwritten list details white servants (assessed at one rate) and black slaves (assessed at a higher rate), while the printed list just notes "servants".--From introductory note.
