Summary:
In this portion of the depression assessment, we learn that Cooper does not have a close relationship with his parents. Since he was young, Cooper learned he could not speak to his father about his problems. With his mother, who experiences depression and has attempted suicide in the past, Cooper has to hold truths back so that things sound better than they are in order to sustain her emotional well being. Outside of his parents, Cooper has a sister who looks out for him, but the fact that he works for her husband, his brother-in-law, complicates that relationship. Friends often tell Cooper he is negative, but he has distanced himself from them. He considers being social to be an effort and his presence to be burden on his friends. When around others, Cooper found that he had to pretend everything’s fine, like he does with his mother, which made those social encounters more work than fun. A few months ago, Cooper broke up with his girlfriend, which he believes was a result of his talking about his problems with her. Since the breakup, he has not been dating and misses having someone to talk to.
