Summary:

Following up with the seasonal nature of Nathan’s depression, we learn that these feelings are connected to the death of Nathan’s younger sister. Nathan was in high school when he was babysitting his six-year-old sister, and she drowned while he was making her lunch. The story, which he recalls in great detail, is difficult for Nathan to recount, and he becomes visibly emotional. Following the tragedy, Nathan’s parents divorced and his father wouldn’t speak to him for several years, blaming him for the accident. To this day, Nathan can’t go near pools, which cause him to feel nauseous. The smell of chlorine along with several other smells and sounds trigger memories of his sister’s death. Nathan frequently remembers the day of the accident and holds a considerable amount of guilt. Nathan has a current plan to successfully commit suicide in a way that friends and loved ones would not intervene and has strong desires to self-harm.
